BLACK BEAUTY Empowers

Navigating a predominantly white institution (PWI) as a Black woman can feel isolating — but Jaida Day is changing that narrative. As the CEO and founder of Black Beauty Near You (BBNY) and a full-time software engineer, Jaida is helping young Black women feel seen, celebrated, and supported through a platform designed specifically for them.

“I went through the same thing,” Jaida shares, reflecting on her own experience. “I created BBNY University so Black girls across the country would know they’re not alone — not just academically, but personally and professionally too.” Whether through late-night group chats or beauty kits curated with care, BBNY offers community where it’s needed most.

“When you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you do even better.”

The inspiration behind BBNY is deeply personal. As part of the mere 2% of Black women in the tech workforce, Jaida understands how heavy it can feel to be the only one in the room. “Especially in tech, it hits different,” she says. “I wanted to create a space where we don’t just feel seen — but uplifted.” For Jaida, BBNY is a mirror and a message: Black women do belong here, and they can thrive while building real sisterhood.

A signature feature of BBNY is its seasonal beauty kits, each one crafted to meet the practical and emotional needs of Black students. From a winter “Silk Press Kit” complete with maintenance tips, to a summer “Hot Girl Essentials Kit” filled with lashes, lip gloss, and Black girl joy — every package is a tangible reminder that coils, culture, and confidence belong on every campus.

At the core of everything Jaida does is a commitment to ease, support, and celebration. “Ease is knowing you don’t have to say yes to everything,” she explains. “Support is showing up. Celebration is pausing to acknowledge how far we’ve come — because we deserve that.”
